Hercule lay on his belly in the lukewarm water of a shallow pool, formed by a tranquil stream trickling through and filling the level area. His legs and arm he tucked underneath like a deer, black wings floppily folded against his back. The left arm he kept outstretched in front, blood seeping like red mist in the waters from the gaping wound. He tried licking it, but nothing would make it heal faster.

Could he Heal like a vempar in this form? At least he was alive, even though he was still amazed as to how. He remembered running, seeing a slope with a curved boulder jutting out its side like a shelter, then quickly ducking inside. There, he’d waited. But for some odd reason, the Draevs didn’t follow. Had something else caught their attention? It was too convenient for a mere coincidence. Lord God must have answered his plea, which meant Hercule would have to keep the promise he’d made in return.

The sound of a sharp gasp caught his ear, and he tilted his head to the grassy bank across the pond, heart thumping. What stood there at the water’s edge startled him more than any Draev.

‘Marigold?!’

The honey-blonde faeryn stood motionless, large mint eyes focused on the young dragon, black rag-like wings and smooth opal scales resting in the shallow water.

The moaning stopped when it noticed her, its golden gaze intense, so beautiful and mystical. Wonder lit Marigold’s face before she gasped in horror at the wound and blood-tinted water. “How cruel! How could somebody do this? You poor creature.”

Careful step after step, she waded near the injured dragon, not wanting to frighten it, and unsure if he was willing to let her get close.

Hercule started, instinct telling him to run, as she slowly approached. ‘Calm down, she doesn’t know it’s me. The son of a nobleman must always remain calm in a crisis,’ he told himself.

Should he let her come close? There were no feelings of hate or fear coming from her, and it looked like she might plan on helping him, instead of calling for the Draevs. His mind churned, undecided, until she was already at his side and kneeling beside his injured arm. It was astonishing how quiet and smooth her unheard footsteps had been, the grace with which a faeryn moved through nature.

“There, there...” her voice soothed, examining how deep the wound was. “It’s a hole, clean through. What did this?”

The dragon’s reptilian gaze stayed on her intently. She was quite small compared to him, like a child to a pony.

‘That gold color,’ Marigold thought, ‘I’ve seen golden eyes like that before...’

Hercule, and his father. They had golden eyes, an inherited trait of the Dragonsbane bloodline. A fitting last name, indeed, the way their irises matched this dragon’s so perfectly.

“Don’t you worry, sir dragon, I’ll help you. Ehm, I wish I had Healing power like vempars do.” Her eyebrows slanted down and she focused on the task of taking off the skirt slip from under her
